Coupling thermomechanical processing and alloy design to improve textures in Mg-Zn-Ca sheet alloys The effect of Ca and Zn additions on the microstructure and texture evolution during thermomechanical processing of Mg-Zn-Ca sheet alloys was investigated. Plane strain compression testing in a Gleeble Thermomechanical simulator was used to physically simulate a 10-pass rolling schedule while allowing for careful control and monitoring of the processing parameters. Textures in the as-deformed ternary alloy samples demonstrate a weak maximum basal intensity and spreading in the transverse direction. Increasing the Zn content to 3 wt% in the ternary alloys resulted in samples that not only demonstrated weak textures in the as-deformed state, but in which static recrystallization promoted a further decrease in basal texture intensity. The evolution in texture during SRX is associated with as-deformed microstructures with broad grain orientation spreads and a low degree of recrystallization. Note 3/17/2021: There was an error when calibrating the scale bars for the optical images, this is currently being corrected. At this time, the scale bar is off by a factor of 2: if the scale bar reads 100 µm, the correct calibration is 200 µm.
